Each one is typed out whole and gets its own line.

This applique builds a Jamaican flag from four separate pieces joined by sewing rather than color change mid-round. The green body starts with a chain 9 and 8 single crochets, then grows in rounds to row 18, with the green strips worked over that same span to shape the corners. Yellow stripes are worked flat on a smaller 3.50 mm hook across more than 16 rounds, then set on the diagonal and stitched down with their own tails. Before starting, have both hooks on hand, all three colors wound and ready, and a needle set aside for the sewing stage.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Cutting tails too short after fastening off
Leave a long tail on the Green Strips and Yellow Stripes as instructed, since these are used directly for sewing. A short tail means rejoining yarn just to attach the piece.
Placing stripes and triangles before checking alignment
Lay all pieces on the green body dry before sewing anything down, confirming the diagonal line runs corner to corner. Stitching one end first with no check can leave the far end short of the opposite side.

Key to this pattern, 4 short forms

Body of the Flag

Round 1

Start with a slip knot using green yarn; Chain 9, then create 8 single crochets (sc), giving you 8 points.

Rounds 2–18

Continue to work in rounds, creating rows (or rounds) 1 through 18; at the end of round 18, turn your work around to start on round 2.

Yellow Stripes

Round 1

Using a smaller 3.50 mm hook and yellow yarn, make a slip knot; Chain 3, then do 2 sc.

Rounds 2–16

Continue in this manner for more than 16 rounds, 2 sc in each st.

Rounds 17–20

After finishing 20 rows, fasten off, cutting the yarn and leaving a long tail.

Black Triangles

Round 1

Make a slip knot with black yarn and chain 2.

Round 2

Increase in the next st (2 sc in the same st).

Round 3

For each subsequent round, continue to increase at each end, working a straight number of sc between the increases; keep repeating this increase pattern until you have a triangle shape with the desired number of st.Once you've obtained the triangle size you need, fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Green Strips

Rounds 2–18

For rounds 2 to 18, maintain 8 single crochets across, for a total of 17 rows; Work 1 sc in each of the 6 sts, 3 sc in the next st, then 16 sc along the side, 3 sc in the next st, 6 sc across to the other side, and 3 sc in the final st of the round.Fasten off, cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for later use.

Assembly, in order

Step 1Place the yellow stripes diagonally across the green body of the flag.
Step 2Sew the stripes onto the flag using the yarn tail, starting from one corner and working your way to the opposite side.
Step 3Next, place the black triangles on each end of the yellow stripes and sew them in place as well.
Step 4Any loose ends or tails can be secured and knotted before being snipped off to neaten up the project.

Check these before you start

  • Keep stitch counts even across the 8 single crochets of round 1 before the shaping rounds begin, since a miscount there carries through all 18 rounds.
  • Do not fasten off and cut the tail short on the Green Strips or Yellow Stripes; both tails are the sewing thread for assembly.

Set-up

  • Confirm you have both hook sizes ready: 4.50 mm for the green body, 3.50 mm for the yellow stripes.
  • Wind green, yellow, and black yarn separately so no color sits tangled when a piece is fastened off.
  • Read through the Body of the Flag rounds first, since the round count there sets the shape the other pieces are sewn onto.
  • Leave long tails when fastening off the Green Strips and Yellow Stripes rounds; these are used for sewing, not woven in early.

Finishing

  1. Weave in the starting tail on the Body of the Flag before laying out the stripes, so it does not get caught underneath.
  2. Lay the Yellow Stripes diagonally across the green body and sew them down with their own tail, working corner to corner.
  3. Position and sew the Black Triangles at each end of the yellow stripes, then knot and trim every remaining loose end.

Construction

The 3 sc increases placed at the corners in rounds 2-18 of the Green Strips push the fabric outward at four points, which is what gives the body its flag-like rectangle rather than a plain square.

The Yellow Stripes are worked flat and separately rather than joined mid-body, since a diagonal stripe cannot follow the same round shaping as the green background and needs its own straight rows before being sewn on at an angle.

Time per section

Body of the Flagabout 45-60 minutes, because the piece runs 18 rounds before the strip shaping is added
Yellow Stripesabout 30-40 minutes, because the smaller 3.50 mm hook and more than 16 rounds slow the stitch pace
Assembly and finishingabout 30 minutes, because the stripes and triangles are sewn on by hand and every tail needs securing

Common questions

Why does this pattern use two different hook sizes?
The 4.50 mm hook works the green body at a looser gauge, while the 3.50 mm hook tightens the Yellow Stripes so they read as a distinct, slightly denser band. Using one hook for both would blur the contrast between the pieces.
Can the Yellow Stripes be sewn on before the Black Triangles?
Yes, the assembly order calls for the stripes first, sewn from one corner to the opposite side. The triangles are added afterward at each stripe end, once the diagonal line is already anchored.
What if the tail left after fastening off is too short to sew with?
Rejoin a fresh length of the same color yarn at the fastened-off point and use that for sewing instead. The original instructions call for a long tail specifically to avoid this, so check tail length before cutting.
