What comes off the printer, what stays behind, and how many sheets to expect before you start.

Decide before you spend the paper

What goes on the paper
On by default, sized to about a third of the sheet width.Off by default. On a long pattern they can add several sheets.The blocks that follow the rounds. Turn them off for the instructions alone.

Your three switches stay inside this one browser. They are the whole of what gets kept anywhere on your side of the connection.

What lands on the sheet

Printed

  • The pattern title, the round count and the address of the page, as a header line
  • The standfirst under the title
  • The photograph of the finished piece, at the top right
  • The materials list, with every group the source gave
  • The whole short-form key, forced open, on the same paper as the rounds
  • Every round, with its label, its instruction and its count column
  • A 4 mm box beside each round, to tick in pencil as you work it
  • The notes, the slips, the variations and the questions
  • The line saying where the pattern was published, with the address spelled out

Left behind

  • The masthead and the menu
  • The bar of buttons above the pattern
  • The footer and both sign-up forms
  • The four related patterns printed under the source line
  • The step photographs, unless you tick them on above
  • The breadcrumb trail
  • Every focus ring and highlight the screen uses

How many sheets to expect

It depends entirely on the pattern, and this site would rather say so than promise a single page for everything. Sunburst Granny Square: Free 4-Round Crochet Pattern for Scrap Yarn runs to 4 rounds and comes off the printer on one sheet with its key on the same side. Enchanting Lizzie the Unicorn Amigurumi Crochet Pattern runs to 94 rounds across 11 separate pieces, and no layout puts that on one sheet.

With scripting switched off

Use the browser's own print command: Ctrl and P on Windows and Linux, Cmd and P on a Mac. The three switches above need scripting, so the sheet comes out with everything on it, and the key still prints, because the key is part of the page rather than something a script builds.

Why there is no file to save

A saved file fixes the layout to one paper size, one set of margins and one language. Your browser already knows all three, and it knows which printer you are standing next to. The button here hands the page to that dialogue and gets out of the way.

The tick boxes beside the rounds exist on paper only. Nothing on the screen records which round you have finished.
