Each square is built over 10 rounds from a magic ring center: the first three rounds shape the classic granny corners, solid and chain-1 spaced rounds alternate in a chosen color sequence through round 9, and a single crochet border in round 10 finishes the square. The three squares are joined edge-to-edge with a slip stitch seam, a chained strap is attached at the top, and both sides of the bag opening are edged with single crochet and corner shaping. Before starting, have a 5.5 mm hook, medium worsted weight acrylic in your chosen colors, scissors, and a yarn needle within reach — no stuffing or wire is involved, only stitching and joining.
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Loose magic ring center
- Pull the tail firmly after placing the Round 1 stitches so no gap shows at the middle of the square once later rounds are added.
- Missing a chain-2 corner
- Count four corners before moving to the next round; a skipped corner throws off the shape and makes the squares mismatched at joining.
- Joining through the wrong loop
- Work the slip stitch join into the chain-1 spaces and back loops only, not through both loops, or the seam will show on the outer side of the purse.

Check these before you start
- Use a 5.5 mm hook throughout; a smaller hook will pull the chain-2 corner spaces tight and distort the square's shape.
- Tighten the magic ring firmly after the first round's stitches are placed, or a visible hole will remain at the center of each square.
- If changing colors between squares, keep tension consistent across all three so the finished panels match in size for a clean slip stitch join.

Set-up

Construction
Each round adds a chain-2 corner space at the same four points.
