This hat starts as a magic ring worked into 12 double crochets, then builds outward in alternating front post double crochets and standard double crochets until the crown reaches 24 stitches. From there the piece turns each round rather than working continuously in the round, joining with a slip stitch and rising with a chain 3 before the next pass. The brim finishes with a plain front post double crochet round after a chain-2 turn. Before starting, have a single skein of jumbo weight yarn, an E/5.5 mm hook, and a stitch marker or two on hand for tracking the join point.
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Losing track of the join point
- Place a stitch marker at the top of the chain 3 before turning, since a turned round makes the join easy to lose mid-pattern.
- Working FPdc into the wrong stitch
- Insert the hook around the full post of the stitch below the current row, not around the post one row down, or the texture columns will shift out of line.
- Skipping the chain 3 as a stitch
- Treat the starting chain 3 as the first double crochet of the round and work the closing slip stitch into its top, or the stitch count will fall short of the total.

Check these before you start
- This piece turns after every round instead of working continuously, so keep track of right side versus wrong side as you go.
- The chain 3 at the start of each round counts as the first double crochet; work into it accordingly when you reach the join.
- Front post double crochets are worked around the post of the stitch below, not into the top loops, which is what creates the raised texture.
- The hat is worked in a single color, so no color changes or carried strands need managing.

Set-up
- Confirm the one skein of Caron Jumbo yarn is enough for the full 6 rounds of the main pattern plus the finishing round before casting on.
- Read through Round 2 once before starting, since the FPdc-and-dc alternation sets the texture pattern used for the rest of the crown.
- Mark the top of each starting chain 3 so the closing slip stitch at the end of every round lands in the right spot.

Finishing

Construction
The increases in Round 2 are built into the stitch pattern itself: each repeat adds one dc and one FPdc into the same stitch, doubling the round to 24 total stitches without a separate increase row.
