This trio builds from the same small parts — a six-round Head, two five-round Legs, two six-round Arms, a four-round Body, and a two-round Tail — with Bunny Ears at eight rounds, Bear Ears at a single round, or Deer Ears at four rounds (plus a pair of four-round Antlers) swapped in depending on the animal. Every piece works in a continuous spiral in bulky chenille, with brown DK-weight cotton reserved for antlers and black for embroidered eyebrows. Before picking up the hook, have both yarn weights, safety eyes, a safety nose, polyfill, and a stitch marker within reach, since no round is joined and the marker is the only way to track where each one starts. Finished size is approximately 13 cm (5 in) tall, not including ears or antlers.
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Losing track of the round start
- Since no round is joined or chained up, place a stitch marker in the first stitch and move it up each round; without it the Head and Body stitch counts will drift.
- Mixing up Bunny and Deer ears
- Check the round count before starting an ear: Bunny Ears work 8 rounds, Deer Ears work only 4. Confirm you have a matching pair before sewing either set on.
- Starting Legs in a magic ring instead of a chain
- Legs begin from a chain of 4, working 2 sc up one side and 4 sc into each end to reach 12 stitches; starting in a magic ring instead will produce the wrong shape at the foot.

Face Shaping & Embroidery
Once the head is complete and stuffed, shape the muzzle and eye area using the yarn tail or a length of matching yarn:
Insert your needle at the center front of the neck (point 1) and bring it out at the outer corner of one eye (point 2).
Re-insert at the inner corner of the same eye (point 3) and bring the needle back out at point 1.
Repeat for the second eye.
Pull both yarn ends gently to create a subtle eye indent, then secure and hide the ends inside the head.
Thread one end of yarn under the safety nose and bring it out at the center back of the neck to pull the nose inward slightly.
Bring both ends together, knot securely, and hide inside the head.
Using black embroidery thread, embroider small eyebrows above the safety eyes.
Assembly, in order
Step 1Stuff the Head firmly and evenly. Complete the face shaping as described in the Face Shaping section.
Step 2Sew the Head to the top of the Body using the long yarn tail from the Body. Use a whipstitch around the full opening, pull snug, and secure.
Step 3The Tail should already be sewn to the back of the Body. If not, attach it now at the center back, just above the base.
Step 4Sew the Ears (Bunny, Bear, or Deer, depending on your animal) to the top of the Head, positioning them symmetrically. The yarn tails from each ear are used for sewing.
Step 5Deer only: Sew the Antlers to the top of the Head, between or just in front of the ears.
Step 6Weave in all remaining yarn ends securely.
Check these before you start
- Keep tension tight enough that stuffing does not peek through the fabric; chenille hides small gauge differences less forgivingly than smooth yarn.
- Move the stitch marker up at the start of every round rather than at the end, so it always marks the next stitch to work into.
- Stuff the Head and Body as you close each piece rather than after, since the small openings on these pieces make it harder to pack fiberfill in after sewing.
- Gauge is not critical for this project, but your fabric should be tight enough that stuffing does not show through.
- Finished size: approximately 13 cm (5 in) tall, not including ears or antlers.

Set-up
- Sort yarn by piece: bulky chenille for Head, Body, Legs, and Arms; DK-weight cotton-blend for antlers if working the deer.
- Place a stitch marker before Round 1 of any piece — rounds are not joined or chained up, so the marker is the only round tracker.
- Decide which ear set you need before starting: Bunny Ears run 8 rounds, Deer Ears run 4, and starting the wrong one wastes stitching time.
- Read through the Head's Round 1 and Round 2 once before starting, since the stitch count changes twice in quick succession (8 to 16, then 16 to 24).
Finishing
- Weave in and trim any loose ends from color or yarn-weight changes before assembly, working through the inside of the stuffed pieces so nothing shows on the surface.
- Stuff the Head firmly and evenly, then complete the face shaping and embroidered eyebrows before it is sewn to the Body.
- Whipstitch the Head to the Body around the full opening using the Body's long tail, pulling snug, then attach the Tail at center back just above the base and the Ears symmetrically at the top of the Head.
Construction
All of the Head's shaping happens in the first two rounds — 8 inc in a magic ring to 16 stitches, then an sc/inc repeat to 24 — after which Rounds 3 through 6 work even, so the rounded crown forms early and the rest of the Head is a straight tube.
The Legs start from a chain of 4 rather than a magic ring, worked 2 sc along one side and 4 sc into each end, which produces a flat oval foot base before Round 3 decreases it down to 9 stitches to shape the leg.
