Each one is typed out whole and gets its own line.

This anklet pairs two crochet techniques in one piece: a tapestry-crochet band worked flat in single crochet rows, with seed beads pre-strung on thread and placed on wrong-side rows to form a geometric diamond pattern, and four separately worked amigurumi animal charms made in continuous rounds at a very small scale. The charms hang from the band's lower edge on beaded dangle strands through bronze jump rings. Before starting, have Color A and the three accent colors of size 10 thread strung with beads in the exact sequence each row calls for, plus both the 1.65 mm and 1.00 mm steel hooks within reach.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Beads strung in the wrong order
String beads in reverse of the row's stated sequence, since the first bead strung is the last one placed; check against the Row 1 and Row 3 sequences before starting the band.
Losing track of RS and WS rows
Mark Row 1 with a scrap of contrast thread at the start, since only odd-numbered rows carry beads; a quick glance at the marker confirms which side is facing out.
Overstuffing a 0.75 to 1 inch charm
Add fiberfill in small pinches and check the surface after each one; charms are stuffed lightly so the stitches do not stretch past the color-block shaping, like the Rnd 5 muzzle split.

Preparation

Step by step: MR, 6 sc in orange. (6 sts).

Step by step: MR, 6 sc in orange. (6 sts).

Pre-string seed beads onto Color A (terracotta) thread before beginning. You will need approximately 252 beads. String them in the color sequence described below, remembering to string in reverse order.

The bronze beads are placed at positions 3, 9, 15, 21, 27, and 33 on Rows 1 and 13. All other positions get terracotta beads on those rows.

Tie Construction

At the end of Row 13, chain 30 stitches loosely. Slip stitch back along the chain to reinforce it, then fasten off, leaving a 6-inch tail.

Rejoin thread to the opposite end of the foundation chain row at stitch 1. Chain 30 stitches loosely. Slip stitch back along the chain, fasten off leaving a 6-inch tail.

For a braided tie alternative, leave thread tails approximately 12 inches long on each end and braid them into cords 4 to 5 inches long, securing with an overhand knot.

Mane Ring

Using orange-red thread, chain 24 . Sl st into first chain to form a ring. Work 2 sc into each chain around the ring. (48 sts) Fasten off. Sew around the outer edge of the head at Rnds 4 to 5.

Tail

Using yellow thread, chain 8 . Sc back along chain from 2nd ch from hook. At tip, work 3 sc into last ch for the tuft. Fasten off. Sew to back of body.

Legs

Make 4. For each: chain 4 , sl st into 2nd ch from hook and each ch back to base. Sew 2 to front lower body and 2 to back.

Face Details

Using black thread, embroider two small straight-stitch eyes and a V-shaped nose at approximately Rnd 3 from top of head.

Neck

Using pink thread, chain 6 . Sc back along the chain. Sew base to top of body. (6 sts)

Beak

Using pale pink thread, chain 4 . Sl st back along chain. Add a tiny black stitch at the tip. Sew to head.

Legs

Make 2. Using pale pink thread, chain 8 . Sl st into 4th chain from hook for the foot bend, then sl st back to base. Sew both to underside of body.

Neck

Using yellow-gold thread, chain 10 . Sc back along all 10 chains. Sew base to top of body.

Ossicones (Horns)

Make 2. Chain 3 , sl st back. Sew to top of head.

Legs

Make 4. Chain 7 . Sc back along chain. At last 2 sts, switch to dark brown for the hoof. Sew to body.

Spots

Using dark brown thread, embroider 6 to 8 small irregular cross stitches or French knots scattered across the body.

Ears

Make 2. Using orange thread, chain 3 . Row 1: sc 2 sts across. Row 2: sc2tog. (1 st) Fasten off. Sew upright to top of head.

Tail

Chain 10 in orange. Sc back along chain in orange for 7 chains, then switch to white and sc in last 3 chains. Sew to back lower body.

Legs

Make 4. Chain 4 , sl st back along chain. Sew to lower body.

Face

Embroider 2 small black eyes and a tiny black nose with straight stitches.

Assembly, in order

Step 1Lightly wet block the main band only, not the charms. Pin flat on a foam blocking mat and allow to dry completely. Do not wet block the animal charms, as the stuffing will absorb water and may distort.
Step 2Hand wash only in cool water with gentle soap. Lay flat to dry away from direct sunlight. Remove before swimming or bathing.
Step 3Thank you so much for choosing this pattern! I hope you love making your Sunset Safari Beaded Animal Anklet as much as I loved designing it. If you create one, I would absolutely love to see it. Tag me on Instagram or share a photo on Facebook so I can cheer you on.
Step 4If this pattern is calling your name but you are not quite ready to start yet, go ahead and save it to your Pinterest boards so you can find it easily later. And please drop a comment below if you make one of these anklets. I would love to hear which animal charm is your favorite!

Check these before you start

  • Use the 1.65 mm steel hook for the band and the 1.00 mm steel hook for the charms; swapping them changes both gauge and how snugly the beads sit.
  • Beads go only on wrong-side rows in the Foundation and Row Sequence; right-side rows are plain single crochet with no beads at all.
  • Color changes inside a charm round, such as the Rnd 5 muzzle split between white and orange, happen mid-round with no join, since every charm works in a continuous spiral.

Set-up

  • Confirm yardage on hand before starting the band: roughly 50 yards of Color A and 20 yards each of Colors B, C, and D.
  • Pre-string the bronze seed beads onto Color A thread in the exact order Row 1 and Row 3 call for; beads come off the strand in reverse, so string the sequence backward.
  • Work a gauge swatch in single crochet with the 1.65 mm hook to confirm 18 sc and 20 rows equal 2 inches before chaining 37 to start the band.
  • Read the full Foundation and Row Sequence once before placing a single bead, so the RS/WS alternation and the bead-row rhythm are clear in advance.

Finishing

  1. Weave in every thread end on the band and on all four charms with a tapestry needle before assembly begins.
  2. Stuff each charm lightly with a small amount of polyester fiberfill, close the final round, and sew it closed as the charm's last rounds direct.
  3. Attach each charm to the band's lower edge with a beaded dangle strand and the matching bronze jump ring, then lightly wet block the band only, pinned flat on a foam mat, leaving the stuffed charms unblocked.

Construction

The band is worked flat in rows rather than in the round because beads are placed only on wrong-side rows and pushed through to the right side; the even-numbered right-side rows carry no beads at all.

Each charm is worked in continuous spiral rounds without joining, which lets a color change like the Rnd 5 muzzle split fall mid-round, and lets the final rounds close with a plain sc2tog decrease before stuffing.

Time per section

Band (Foundation and Row Sequence)about 2-3 hours because every wrong-side row among the 17 rows requires placing pre-strung beads in the correct sequence
Four animal charms (Body and Head, Body, Head rounds)about 3-4 hours total because each charm works at a very small scale with multiple color changes, like the Rnd 5 muzzle split, inside just 6-7 rounds
Assembly and finishingabout 1 hour because of threading beaded dangle strands, attaching 5mm and 3mm jump rings, and blocking the band alone

Common questions

Why is the band worked flat while the charms are worked in continuous rounds?
The band needs wrong-side access on alternating rows to push the pre-strung beads through to the right side, which flat rows provide. The charms use continuous amigurumi rounds instead, since a seamless spiral suits their very small scale and the mid-round color changes.
How do the beads stay in order while crocheting the band?
Beads are strung onto the thread before crocheting begins, in reverse of each row's stated sequence, so the correct bead arrives at the hook when needed. Running the thread through beeswax beforehand also keeps the beads sliding smoothly instead of catching.
