Worsted

What the sample was worked in. Any weight works; the size moves with it.

Each one is typed out whole and gets its own line.

This collection gathers three fast scarf builds: a two-color double crochet panel with a treble crochet accent worked two rows below, an open single crochet mesh finished with fringe, and a Tunisian simple stitch panel built on a forward-and-return pass. Each works flat, row by row, from a foundation chain. Before starting, have both colors of worsted weight yarn wound and ready for the two-tone panel, bulky yarn on hand for the 8 mm hook version, and the Tunisian hook with its cord and stopper ready for the slip-stitch cast-off.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Losing track of front-loop versus back-loop rows
Mark the right side of the work with a scrap of contrast yarn or a stitch marker at the start, since the two-tone panel alternates between front-loops-only and back-loops-only and the rows look similar at a glance.
Working the treble into the wrong row
Count back two full rows, not two stitches, before placing the treble crochet in the skipped stitch — counting rows instead of stitches keeps the texture column straight.
Confusing chain-1 and chain-2 turns between projects
The two-tone panel turns with chain 1, while the single crochet mesh turns with chain 2 — check which project is in hand before turning, since the wrong turning chain changes the edge stitch count.

The materials list

  1. Bulky or chunky weight yarn
  2. 8 mm Tunisian crochet hook with cord and stopper
  1. Two strands of worsted weight yarn held together
  2. 8 mm crochet hook

Main Pattern

Round 1

Color A Work double crochet in back bump of each chain, switch to Color B at end, chain 1 and turn

Round 2

Color B Work double crochet in front loops only across row, last stitch through both loops, switch to Color A, chain 1 and turn

Round 3

Color A First stitch double crochet through both loops, then repeat one treble crochet into skipped stitch from two rows below, skip one stitch, three double crochet in back loops only, finish with double crochet through both loops, switch to Color B, chain 1 and turn

Row 4 Color B Repeat the same pattern as Row 3 but using Color B, switch to Color A at the end Repeat alternating Row 3 and Row 4 until desired length is reached

Main Pattern

Round 1

Work single crochet in second chain from hook, chain 1, skip one chain, repeat single crochet and chain 1 pattern across, finish with single crochet, switch color, chain 2 and turn

Round 2

Work single crochet in first chain space, chain 1, skip next stitch, repeat single crochet in chain space followed by chain 1, finish with single crochet in last chain space, switch color, chain 2 and turnRepeat alternating rows with color changes until desired width is reached

Fringe Tie yarn ends at edges into knots for fringe effect, add extra strands to edges, comb and trim to desired length

Check these before you start

  • The two-tone panel changes color at the end of each row; carry the unused color loosely up the side rather than cutting it, so you are not weaving in twice as many ends.
  • In the single crochet mesh, the chain-1 spaces are what hold the fringe later, so keep those spaces even — a tight chain-1 closes the gap the fringe needs to sit in.
  • The Tunisian panel is sensitive to tension on the return pass; pull yarn through one loop then two loops evenly, or the fabric will curl more than it should.

Set-up

  • Work a short swatch in the back-loop-only and front-loop-only sections to confirm your tension matches the stitch count you expect before committing to full rows.
  • Read Row 3 of the two-tone panel fully before working it: the treble crochet lands in a stitch skipped two rows below, so you need to know which stitch to look for before the hook is already in hand.
  • Check your yarn amounts against the hook size you plan to use — 5.5 mm for worsted weight, 8 mm for bulky or for two strands held together — since swapping hooks without swapping yarn weight changes the finished width.

Finishing

  1. Weave in every color-change end from the two-tone panel individually along the edge rather than bundling them, since there are more ends here than in a single-color piece.
  2. the single crochet mesh, tie the yarn ends at each edge into knots, then add extra strands for fullness before combing and trimming the fringe to an even length.
  3. Block the Tunisian panel flat and let it dry fully before wear; the forward-and-return pass tends to pull the fabric narrower than the foundation chain, and blocking relaxes that pull.

Construction

In the two-tone panel, the treble crochet worked into the stitch skipped two rows below is what creates the vertical texture column — it only reads clearly because Row 3 and Row 4 alternate color, so the treble always sits in the opposite color from the row it's worked in.

The single crochet mesh is built entirely on chain-1 spaces rather than solid stitches, which is why it can take fringe directly at the edge without a separate foundation — the open structure already has somewhere for the knots to sit.

Time per section

Two-color double crochet and treble panelabout 2 hours because the pattern repeats only two rows (Row 3 and Row 4) but each requires tracking loop placement and a two-row-back treble
Single crochet mesh with fringeabout 1.5 hours because the row repeat is just two rows, with most of the remaining time going to tying and trimming fringe
Tunisian simple stitch panelabout 1.5 hours because the forward-and-return pass takes longer per row than a standard crochet row, even though the stitch pattern itself does not change

Common questions

What is the difference between the front-loop and back-loop rows in the two-tone panel?
Row 1 works into the back bump of the foundation chain, while Row 2 works into front loops only across the row, with the last stitch taken through both loops. That shift in loop placement is what sets up the ridge the later rows build texture into.
How long should the single crochet mesh be worked before adding fringe?
Repeat the two-row pattern until the piece reaches the desired width, then stop and move to the fringe step. The fringe is added after the mesh rows are finished, not worked into the rows themselves.
