Each one is typed out whole and gets its own line.

These fingerless gloves start as a single foundation chain, joined into a ring and built upward in eight rounds of open mesh. A plain single crochet round sets the stitch count before the chain-5 mesh pattern takes over, repeating until the piece reaches the length you want. Before you begin, have medium weight yarn, a 3.5 mm hook (or whatever size gives you gauge), and a yarn needle on hand. Measure your wrist first — the foundation chain needs to fit it snugly, since everything above depends on that opening round.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Foundation chain not a multiple of 5
Count the chain twice before joining it into a ring. If it is off by even one or two stitches, the chain-5 mesh repeat will not divide evenly around the round.
Mesh loops pulled too tight
Keep the ch-5 loops relaxed as you work the sc into the 5th stitch. Tight loops close up the open mesh look and make the glove stiff instead of stretchy.
Losing track of the skip-4 count
Count stitches out loud or mark every fifth stitch with a scrap of yarn as you go. Skipping the wrong number shifts the mesh pattern off-center for the rest of the round.

The materials list

  1. Medium weight yarn
  2. 3.5 mm crochet hook or hook size to achieve gauge
  3. Yarn needle

Main Pattern

This chain should be long enough to fit snugly around your wrist. As an example, the sample shown uses 30 chains for the foundation chain — adjust your own chain count (in multiples of 5) to match your wrist measurement.

Round 1

(Foundation Chain): Chain a number of stitches that is a multiple of 5; this chain should be long enough to fit snugly around your wrist; join the first and last chains with a sl st to form a ring.

Round 2

First Row Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch); work sc evenly around the ring; join the last sc to the top of the ch 1 with a sl st.

Round 3

(Mesh Row 1): Ch 5, skip the next 4 stitches, sc in the 5th stitch; repeat across the row; join the last sc to the top of the ch 5 with a sl st.

Round 4

(Mesh Row 2): Ch 5, skip the next 4 stitches, sc in the 5th stitch; repeat across the row; join the last sc to the top of the ch 5 with a sl st.

Round 5

(Mesh Row 3): Ch 5, skip the next 4 stitches, sc in the 5th stitch; repeat across the row; join the last sc to the top of the ch 5 with a sl st.

Round 6

(Mesh Row 4): Ch 5, skip the next 4 stitches, sc in the 5th stitch; repeat across the row; join the last sc to the top of the ch 5 with a sl st.

Round 7

Thumb Area Ch 10, skip the next 4 stitches, sc in the 5th stitch; repeat across the row; join the last sc to the top of the ch 10 with a sl st.

Round 8

(Rows 6 and beyond): Ch 5, skip the next 4 stitches, sc in the 5th stitch; repeat across the row; join the last sc to the top of the ch 5 with a sl st.Continue working in rows of mesh stitches until the glove reaches your desired length (the sample shown is worked to approximately elbow length).

Assembly, in order

Step 1Fasten off and weave in any loose ends.

Check these before you start

  • Keep the foundation chain count a true multiple of 5; an off count will throw the skip-4, sc-in-5th pattern out of alignment for every round that follows.
  • Work the sl st joins snugly but not tight — a loose join leaves a visible seam line up the mesh, a tight one puckers the round.
  • Check tension in the first mesh round before continuing; the chain-5 loops should sit open and even, not cinched, since that same tension repeats for the full glove.
  • Note that the 8-round count is the sample; the piece is worked until it reaches your desired length, so treat the round count as a guide rather than a fixed stop.

Set-up

  • Measure around your wrist and chain to that length in multiples of 5, so the mesh pattern divides evenly with no partial repeat at the join.
  • Work a short gauge swatch in the chain-5 mesh to confirm your hook size gives you the drape you want before committing to a full round count.
  • Read Round 2 before you start it — the single crochet round sets your working stitch count, and the sl st join there determines how the mesh rounds line up.
  • Decide on your finished length in advance (to the wrist, to the elbow) so you know roughly how many mesh rounds beyond the sample 8 you may need.

Finishing

  1. Fasten off at the end of your last mesh round.
  2. Weave in the starting tail from the foundation chain and the fastening-off tail with the yarn needle, running each through several stitches on the wrong side.
  3. Trim loose ends close to the work once woven in, then try the glove on to confirm the wrist opening still fits snugly.

Construction

The single crochet round worked directly after the foundation chain establishes a firm, stitch-for-stitch base, so the open chain-5 mesh above has a stable edge to anchor into rather than starting directly from a ring of chains.

Each mesh round repeats the same skip-4, sc-in-5th structure and joins with a sl st to the top of its own ch-5, which stacks the loops directly above one another and produces the piece's straight, column-like mesh pattern rather than a staggered one.

Time per section

Foundation chain and joining ringabout 10-15 minutes because the chain must be measured to your wrist and counted before joining
Single crochet roundabout 15-20 minutes because every chain stitch is worked individually before the mesh begins
Mesh rounds (8 and beyond)about 1.5-2 hours because each round repeats the chain-5 pattern around the full circumference and the piece is worked until it reaches your desired length

Common questions

How do I know how many chains to start with?
Measure around your wrist with the yarn you plan to use and chain to that length, rounding to the nearest multiple of 5. The sample uses 30 chains, so use that as a reference point for a similar gauge.
Can I make the gloves longer than the 8 sample rounds?
Yes. The mesh rounds repeat the same chain-5 pattern, so continue working rounds in sequence until the piece reaches your desired length, whether that is at the wrist or up toward the elbow.
What if my mesh rounds come out tighter on one side?
This usually means the skip-4 count drifted partway through a round. Recount from the sl st join and make sure each repeat skips exactly 4 stitches before working the next sc.
