Each one is typed out whole and gets its own line.

This blanket builds from nine mint granny squares with cream border rounds, each topped with a raised rose worked separately and sewn to the center. Construction runs in three phases: squares first, roses second, joining and scalloped edging last. Before picking up a hook, have MC, CA, CB, and CC wound and ready, a G-6 hook on hand, and a tapestry needle for both weaving ends and sewing roses in place. Finished panels measure about 7.5 inches square before assembly, growing to a 24-inch blanket after joining.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Catching the wrong loop on the petal ring
Front loop only means the back loop stays open for the next round of petals; if you accidentally work into both loops, the petal ring will not sit above the center properly. Check the loop before each stitch, not after.
Uneven squares from drifting gauge
If one square measures off from the 7.5-inch target, it will show at the join. Recheck your swatch gauge partway through the nine squares and resize your hook if needed rather than pushing through.

The materials list

  1. Option 1: Lion Brand Pound of Love. This DK weight acrylic is machine washable and incredibly soft against baby skin. One skein of mint covers your main color with plenty to spare.
  2. Option 2: Paintbox Yarns Simply DK. Available in gorgeous pastels including a near perfect mint. You will need approximately 5 balls of MC, 2 balls of CA, 1 ball of CB, and 1 ball of CC.
  3. Option 3: Drops Safran. This cotton acrylic blend adds lovely drape and breathability for warmer climates. Approximately 4 balls of MC, 2 balls of CA, 1 ball of CB, and 1 ball of CC.
  4. Any DK weight yarn that achieves gauge works beautifully. Prioritize machine washable fibers for practical baby care. Avoid heavily textured or variegated yarns since they will hide your beautiful rose details.

  1. Main Color (MC): Mint green, approximately 600 yards of DK weight yarn

Round 14

Checkpoint: After Round 7, each square should measure approximately 7 inches by 7 inches before any blocking. If your squares are smaller than 6.5 inches, increase your hook size by half a size. If larger than 7.5 inches, decrease your hook size.

Assembly, in order

Step 1Weave in all ends securely using a tapestry needle. Work ends back and forth through the backs of stitches in at least two directions to prevent unraveling.
Step 2Wet blocking: Submerge the completed blanket in cool water and gently press out air. Do not wring or twist. Press the water out by rolling the blanket in a clean towel. Lay flat on blocking mats. Use rust-proof pins to stretch each corner to its finished measurement. Gently smooth each square to an even shape. Allow to dry completely, which may take 12 to 24 hours.
Step 3The scallop border will open and flatten beautifully with blocking, and the 3D roses will retain their lovely shape.

Check these before you start

  • Keep your G-6 hook consistent across all nine squares; a tension shift partway through will throw off the final 24-inch grid.
  • The rose petals are worked into the front loop only, leaving the back loop free for the next ring, so watch your loop placement closely on each petal round.
  • Change from CC to CB precisely on the final slip stitch of the last inner petal so the color break falls at the join point rather than mid-petal.

Set-up

  • Confirm you have enough of each color: roughly 600 yards MC, 250 yards CA, 80 yards CB, and 40 yards CC in DK weight.
  • Work a 4-inch gauge swatch in MC with the G-6 hook and check against 16 dc by 9 rows; adjust hook size up or down if your square runs small or large.
  • Read through the Petal part once before starting your first rose so the front-loop-only shaping makes sense before your hook is in the ring.
  • Set aside 4 to 6 locking stitch markers for tracking corners and petal counts during the join and border rounds.

Finishing

  1. Weave in all ends from the squares, roses, and border, working each tail back and forth through stitch backs in two directions.
  2. Sew each completed rose to the center of its granny square using the tapestry needle before joining the nine squares together.
  3. Wet block the assembled blanket: submerge in cool water, press out air without wringing, roll in a towel, then pin to 26 inches square on blocking mats and let dry flat.

Construction

Each granny square's rounds build from a center ring outward with corner ch-2 spaces, which is what lets the piece grow evenly to its 7.5-inch finished size before joining.

The rose center and both petal rings are worked in continuous rounds rather than back and forth, while the petals themselves turn and work flat in rows, so the flower can curve upward off the flat square.

Time per section

Nine granny squaresabout 7 to 9 hours because each square takes 45 to 60 minutes across its full round count
Nine rosesabout 3 to 4.5 hours because each rose takes 20 to 30 minutes with its layered petal rounds and front-loop shaping
Joining and borderabout 2 to 3 hours because nine squares must align before the scalloped edge is worked

Common questions

Can you substitute any DK yarn for this blanket?
Yes, any DK weight yarn that hits the stated gauge works, as long as it is machine washable for practical baby care. Avoid heavily textured or variegated yarns, since they will hide the rose detail.
Why does the blanket measure differently before and after blocking?
The squares and finished blanket measure about 24 inches square before blocking and stretch to about 26 inches after wet blocking. Pin each corner to the target measurement on blocking mats to reach that final size.
How many roses does this blanket need?
You need nine roses total, one for each of the nine granny squares. Each rose takes about 20 to 30 minutes, so budget 3 to 4.5 hours for all nine.
