Worsted

What the sample was worked in. Any weight works; the size moves with it.

80

Each one is typed out whole and gets its own line.

This 10-inch red panda builds from seven separate pieces — head, body, two legs, two arms, tail, and ears — each worked in continuous spiral rounds and stuffed before assembly. Color carries the likeness: rust for the body and head, white for face and belly, brown and dark brown for shading and limbs, sand for the tail stripe. Have five yarn colors sorted before the first round, along with 11mm safety eyes, fiberfill, and embroidery-weight thread in black, white, and beige for the facial and claw details worked after assembly.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Losing track of the round start
Since every piece is worked in a continuous spiral with no join, move the stitch marker up after finishing each round rather than trying to count from the color change or a seam line.
Stuffing too loosely before closing
Check each piece against the light before closing it; if fiberfill is visible through the stitches, add more or drop to a smaller hook next time.
Sewing ears off-center or too close together
Position the Ears between Rounds 12 and 16 in a triangle shape, spaced about 8 stitches apart, and pin both before sewing through both layers with matching thread.

The materials list

Face Details

Sew the eyes between Rounds 6 and 7: the left eye between the two sc of the first increase of Round 6, and the right eye between the two sc of the last increase of Round 6. Bring your needle out at the bottom-center of the head, thread on the eye, and pull the anchor thread tight to seat the eye at your desired depth before knotting off inside the head.

Embroider the lower eyelid in white thread and the upper eyelid in black thread for a lively, expressive look.

Embroider the nose as a small triangle in black thread, with the bottom edge one round above the magic ring and the top edge two rounds above that. Add a short vertical line beneath the nose.

Embroider soft eyebrows above each eye using white plush yarn.

Assembly, in order

Step 1Sew the ears to the head, stitching through both layers with cotton thread that matches the body color. Position them in a triangle shape between Rounds 12 and 16, spacing them about 8 stitches apart.
Step 2If desired, tint the ears with crushed dry pastel chalk applied with a soft makeup brush — brown on the inside of the ear, rust on the back.
Step 3Sew the head to the body using a whipstitch, working through the yarn tail left at the base of the head. Before closing the last few stitches, firmly stuff the neck area so the head sits securely.
Step 4Embroider four short claw lines on each paw and foot using beige thread, following the placement of your reference photo.
Step 5Weave in all remaining yarn tails and trim any stray ends.

Check these before you start

  • Work every piece in continuous spiral rounds with no joining slip stitch and no chain between rounds; a stitch marker is the only round tracker.
  • Aim for tight, even stitches rather than a specific gauge — the fabric needs to hide the fiberfill, so adjust hook size if the stitches gap.
  • The Head changes from white to rust partway through its 18 rounds, so keep both colors within reach and weave in each color change as you go rather than leaving it for the end.
  • This pattern is written in US crochet terminology, and with the materials listed the finished red panda stands approximately 10 inches (25 cm) tall.

Set-up

  • Set a stitch marker at the start of every round; nothing is joined, so the marker is the only way to track where each round begins.
  • Check hook size against your tension: the pattern calls for a fabric dense enough that stuffing will not show through, so size down if your spiral gaps.
  • Read through the Head instructions once before casting on, since at 18 rounds it is the longest single piece and changes color partway.

Finishing

  1. Weave in all yarn tails from color changes on the Head and from the second color used on the Legs before stuffing any piece.
  2. Stuff the Head, Body, Legs, Arms, and Tail firmly with fiberfill, checking that no filling shows through the stitches before closing each piece.
  3. Sew the Ears to the Head in a triangle between Rounds 12 and 16, about 8 stitches apart, then whipstitch the Head to the Body through the base yarn tail, adding extra stuffing before closing the last few stitches.

Construction

The Legs begin with 7 sc rather than 6, then increase every round through Round 4 to reach 28 stitches — a wider base shaping that gives the legs enough circumference to stand the finished body upright.

Time per section

Headabout 60-75 minutes because it runs 18 rounds and includes a color change from white to rust partway through
Body, Legs, and Armsabout 90-120 minutes total because the Body alone is 22 rounds and the paired Legs and Arms each need two matching copies
Tail, Ears, and finishingabout 45-60 minutes because the Tail's 13 rounds carry the sand stripe, and assembly includes sewing Ears in place, closing the Head to the Body, and embroidering face and claw details

Common questions

Do the Legs and Arms need to match each other exactly?
Yes — both are made in pairs, so work from the same round counts and color order each time. Any drift in stitch count between the two will show once they are sewn to the Body side by side.
What is the beige thread for if it is not part of the main color list?
It is embroidery-weight cotton reserved for the claw details, worked separately from the black eye and nose stitching and the white eyelid stitching. Save it for the face and paw work after the pieces are assembled.
