Amigurumi giraffe worked in 17 rounds for the body, 12 for the head, with E-4 and B-1 hooks.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Losing the round start in the spiral
Keep the stitch marker in the first stitch of every round and move it up as soon as you complete the round, since nothing marks the turn in a continuous spiral.
Skipping the back-loop-only round
Check Arms Rnd 3 and Legs Rnd 4 before you stitch past them — working in both loops there removes the ridge line the pattern is counting on.

Spots (Make 6)

Use B-1 (2.0 mm) hook. Brown YarnArt Jeans yarn.

Round 1

7 sc in MR, join with sl st. (7)Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing. Make 6 spots total — 3 will be sewn onto the head, 3 onto the body.

Tail

Use E-4 (3.5 mm) hook. Yellow yarn.

Work a crochet cord: chain 12, then sl st back along the chain to form a twisted cord. Leave a long yarn tail at one end for sewing onto the body.

For the tail tip: join Brown yarn at the other end of the cord.

Work 2 ch, then 2 dc into the same stitch, then 3 ch and join with sl st to form a small decorative tuft.

Fasten off and weave in the end.

Assembly, in order

Step 1Attach the head to the body. Using the yarn tail on the body, whipstitch the head firmly to the top of the neck opening, making sure it sits centered and upright.
Step 2Sew on the muzzle. Only after completing the eye indentations, position the muzzle centered on the lower front of the head and sew it down using the yarn tail. The oval shape should sit horizontally.
Step 3Attach the ears. Pinch the base of each ear slightly to give it a natural curve and sew one to each side of the head, just above and behind the eyes.
Step 4Attach the horns. Sew one horn on either side of the top of the head, between the ears, with the Brown tip pointing upward.
Step 5Sew on the spots. Position 3 spots on the head and 3 on the body, spacing them naturally. Sew each down around the entire edge using the yarn tail.
Step 6Attach the tail. Sew the Yellow yarn tail end of the cord to the back lower section of the body, with the Brown tuft pointing downward.
Step 7Embroider the details. Use Brown yarn and a tapestry needle to add small eyebrow stitches above each safety eye. Embroider two small nostrils onto the muzzle using the same or contrasting thread.
Step 8Weave in all remaining yarn ends securely.

Check these before you start

  • Hook size tracks yarn, not piece: use E-4 for every Dolphin Baby chenille section and B-1 for the Jeans DK muzzle and spots — never crochet the whole figure on one hook.
  • Every piece works in a continuous spiral except the tail, so keep the stitch marker on the first stitch of each round and move it up as you go, especially across the Body's 17 rounds.
  • Chenille yarn shows gaps less forgivingly than smooth yarn; keep tension firm and even so stuffing does not peek through, particularly on the larger Body and Head pieces.

Set-up

  • Wind both colors of Dolphin Baby chenille (brown and yellow) and the Jeans DK yarn before you begin, since body, head, limbs, muzzle, and spots all draw from this same stock.
  • Set your stitch marker aside now — every piece except the tail is worked in a continuous spiral, and you will move the marker at the start of each round.
  • Keep the E-4 (3.5 mm) and B-1 (2.0 mm) hooks both within reach — you will swap between them whenever you move from chenille to Jeans yarn.

Finishing

  1. Weave in the yarn tails on each finished piece — arms, legs, ears, horns, and spots — before you begin assembly.
  2. Stuff the body and head firmly with fiberfill, pressing it toward the edges so no gaps remain once the opening closes.
  3. Whipstitch the head to the body first, then attach limbs, ears, horns, spots, and tail in order, using each piece's own starting tail to make the join.

Construction

Arms and Legs both reach their final stitch count through a round of back-loop-only stitches (Arms Rnd 3, Legs Rnd 4), which leaves a visible horizontal ridge on the right side — a built-in guide line rather than a decorative accident.

The Tail is the one piece with zero rounds listed: it is worked as a straight length rather than spiraled, since it carries no stuffing and needs no shaping, unlike every other piece on this pattern.

Time per section

Arms and Legs (4 pieces, 6-8 rounds each)about 1 to 1.5 hours, because four small pieces repeat similar shaping in sequence
Body and Head (17 and 12 rounds)about 2 hours, because of the round count on each and the stuffing needed to hold their shape
Ears, Horns, Spots, Tail, and assemblyabout 1 to 1.5 hours, because six spots and two each of ears and horns add up even though each piece is short, plus eight assembly steps

Common questions

Why does this pattern use two different yarns and hooks?
Himalaya Dolphin Baby chenille on an E-4 hook gives the body, head, and limbs bulk and softness, while YarnArt Jeans DK yarn on a B-1 hook keeps the muzzle and spots fine and crisp. The size contrast between the two yarns is what keeps the giraffe's details from looking bulky.
Can the muzzle color be changed?
Yes — the pattern calls for any light color for the muzzle, since its only job is to contrast against the brown spots. Choose whatever light Jeans DK shade is on hand.
Does the tail need stuffing like the other pieces?
No. The tail has no rounds listed and is worked as a straight cord rather than a stuffed spiral, so skip the fiberfill step there entirely.
