This snowman builds from three stacked spheres: a seven-round head, a five-round body worked in the front loop only for a visible ridge, and an optional six-round hat that finishes with a brim increase. A two-round scarf and a nose complete the set. Have white, black, and orange yarn on hand, a 5.25 mm hook, 12mm safety eyes for the head, 9mm safety eyes or black yarn for buttons, stuffing, a yarn needle, and a stitch marker for tracking rounds before you begin.
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Losing track of the round start
- Move the stitch marker up at the end of every round, not just when you remember. Without turning rows, a dropped marker means recounting the whole round to find your place.
- Working body Round 1 into both loops
- Check that you are working front loop only when attaching to the head loop. Both loops together removes the ridge that defines the neck seam.
- Placing safety eyes before checking spacing
- Confirm the eyes sit one row above the nose and two stitches apart before locking the safety backs in place. Safety eyes cannot be repositioned once secured from the inside.

- Work the body's Round 1 in the front loop only; this leaves a spare loop around the neck join that keeps the seam between head and body clean rather than bulky.
- Stuff the head firmly before closing it, since rounds 5 through 9 hold their shape at 24 stitches with no further increases to disguise underfilling.
- Keep tension even through the increase rounds on the head and body — each jumps stitch count by six, and loose stitches there show as visible dimples rather than a smooth curve.

Set-up
- Set aside enough white yarn to cover both the head and the body — they are the two largest pieces and share the same shade.
- Place a stitch marker in round 1 of the head and move it every round; with no row turns to guide you, it is the only way to track where a round starts.
- Read through the Body round 1 note about attaching to the head loop before you finish stuffing the head, so you know how much stuffing to leave room for.
- Decide before Round 1 of the hat whether it will be worked at all — it is optional, and skipping it changes how much black yarn to pull.
Finishing
- Insert the 12mm safety eyes one row above the nose position, two stitches apart, before the head is fully stuffed and closed.
- Embroider the mouth in black yarn, lining up its edges with the eyes so the face reads straight once the head is sewn to the body.
- Weave in all yarn tails from color changes on the hat and scarf, then attach the hat and scarf to the finished snowman.
Construction
The head's increases land in Rounds 1 through 4, adding six stitches per round from 6 up to 24; Rounds 5 through 9 hold steady at 24, giving the shaping a rounded top before it settles into a straight-sided dome.
The body's Round 1 works in the front loop only where it attaches to the head loop, leaving the back loop free as a ridge — this is what separates the neck visually from the body below it.
