Each one is typed out whole and gets its own line.

This piece is a flat frog film base: an oval worked from a starting chain of 13, shaped with single crochet increases at both rounded ends and joined with a slip stitch at the close of each round. Two smaller magic-ring circles finish the face — a white piece for the eyes and a pink piece for the blush — both stitched onto the oval afterward. Before picking up the hook, have your hook, a yarn needle, and yarn in your base color, white, and pink ready, since all three colors come into play before assembly.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Miscounting stitches on the return side
Work the 10 single crochet on the opposite side into back loops only and count them as you go. Catching the wrong loop or losing count here throws off the join at the end of Round 1.
Pulling the magic ring loose
Cinch the magic ring tail tight before starting Round 2 on the eye white or finishing Part 3, since a loose ring leaves a visible hole at the center of a small circle.
Treating slip-stitch rounds as a spiral
Chain 1 and turn at the start of each new round rather than continuing straight into the next stitch. Skipping the chain-1 will shift the increase placement on the following round.

The materials list

  1. Crochet hook (size to suit your yarn)
  2. Green yarn (for the base film)
  3. White yarn (for the eye whites)
  4. Pink yarn (for the blush)
  5. Yarn needle or craft glue (for sewing the eyes and blush onto the base)

Crocheting the Base Film

Round 1

In the second chain from the hook, make 11 single crochet stitches. In the last chain, make 3 single crochet stitches. On the opposite side, work 10 single crochet stitches, catching the back loops. In the last chain, make 2 single crochet stitches. Slip stitch to join.Step by step: start by working 11 single crochet into the second chain from the hook, then work 3 single crochet into the last chain to turn the corner; working back along the opposite side, work 10 single crochet into the back loops only, then work 2 single crochet into the last chain to turn the second corner, and slip stitch to join.

Round 2

Chain 1. Make 2 single crochet stitches in the first stitch (increase). Work 10 single crochet stitches. Make 3 increases. Work 10 single crochet stitches. Make 2 increases. Slip stitch to join.Step by step: chain 1 to start the round, work an increase (2 single crochet) in the first stitch, work 10 single crochet across, then work 3 more increases in a row; work another 10 single crochet across, work 2 more increases, and slip stitch to join.

Round 3

Chain 1. Make 1 single crochet stitch, followed by an increase. Work 10 single crochet stitches. Repeat "1 single crochet stitch, 1 increase" three times. Work 10 single crochet stitches. Repeat "1 single crochet stitch, 1 increase" two times. Slip stitch to join.Step by step: chain 1, then work 1 single crochet followed by 1 increase and repeat that pair three times total; work 10 single crochet across, then work 1 single crochet followed by 1 increase and repeat that pair two times total; slip stitch to join.

Round 4

Chain 1. Make an increase, followed by 2 single crochet stitches. Work 10 single crochet stitches. Repeat "1 increase, 2 single crochet stitches" three times. Work 10 single crochet stitches. Repeat "1 increase, 2 single crochet stitches" two times. Fasten off using an invisible join.Step by step: chain 1, then work 1 increase followed by 2 single crochet and repeat that group three times total; work 10 single crochet across, then work 1 increase followed by 2 single crochet and repeat that group two times total; fasten off using an invisible join.

Crocheting the Whites of the Eyes (Make Two)

Round 1

With white yarn, make a magic ring and work 6 single crochet stitches into the ring. Pull the ring closed and slip stitch to join.Step by step: make a magic ring with white yarn, work 6 single crochet into the ring, pull the ring closed, and slip stitch to join.

Round 2

Chain 1. Make 2 single crochet stitches in each stitch around (6 increases). Slip stitch to join.

Round 3

Chain 1. Repeat "1 single crochet stitch, 1 increase" six times. Fasten off using an invisible join.Step by step: chain 1, then work 1 single crochet followed by 1 increase and repeat that pair six times total to close the circle, then fasten off using an invisible join.

Crocheting the Blush (Make Two)

Round 1

With pink yarn, make a magic ring and work 6 single crochet stitches into the ring. Pull the ring closed. Fasten off using an invisible join.Step by step: make a magic ring with pink yarn, work 6 single crochet into the ring, pull the ring closed, and fasten off using an invisible join.

Assembly, in order

Step 1Step 1:: Sew the whites of the eyes and blush onto the base film using yarn or glue.
Step 2Step 2:: Optionally, embroider a mouth or other details to create a desired expression.

Check these before you start

  • The return side of Round 1 is worked into back loops only — working into both loops here will pull the seam and distort the oval's flat lie.
  • Each round closes with a slip stitch rather than spiraling, so stitch markers are optional, but marking the first stitch of each round makes the join easier to find.
  • Part 3's single round is fastened off with an invisible join rather than a slip stitch, which keeps the blush circle's edge smooth for sewing onto the base.

Set-up

  • Count your starting chain of 13 before working the first single crochet row, since the oval shape depends on an accurate chain length.
  • Read Round 1 of the Main Pattern in full before starting — it works down one side, turns the corner with 3 single crochet, returns on the back loops, then turns again with 2 single crochet.
  • Have your white and pink yarn wound and ready before you finish the oval base, since Part 2 and Part 3 each start fresh with a magic ring.
  • Check that your hook size matches your yarn weight for a firm, closed fabric, since a loose gauge will leave gaps at the increase points on the oval ends.

Finishing

  1. Weave in all yarn ends from the oval base, the eye white, and the blush piece before assembly, since loose tails will show through on a flat piece.
  2. Position the white eye piece and the pink blush piece on the base film and pin or test-place them before sewing, since placement is not worked into the stitch count.
  3. Sew the eye whites and blush onto the base using yarn or glue, then embroider a mouth or other details to finish the expression.

Construction

Round 1 of the Main Pattern places its increases asymmetrically — 3 single crochet at one end and 2 at the other — which rounds one tip of the oval more than the other rather than shaping it as a true symmetrical oval.

Both the eye white and the blush circle are worked flat in joined rounds rather than spiraled, which keeps each round's edge distinct and makes it easier to count stitches when matching a second piece.

Time per section

Main Pattern (3 rounds, oval base)about 20-25 minutes because the asymmetric increases at each end of Round 1 need careful counting
Part 2 (2 rounds, eye white)about 10 minutes because it is a small flat circle with a single increase round
Part 3 and assembly (1 round, blushabout 15-20 minutes because the invisible join and placement of eyes, blush, and mouth take more care than the stitching itself

Common questions

Do you need to make two eye whites and two blush circles?
The pattern lists a quantity of one for each part, but for a symmetrical face you will likely want a matching second piece of each. Work a second eye white and blush circle using the same round counts before moving to assembly.
Why is the return side worked into back loops only?
Working the back loops on the opposite side of the oval keeps that edge flatter and distinct from the front loop edge of the starting side. This is what lets the base lie flat rather than cupping at one edge.
Should the film base be stuffed?
No stuffing is called for in this pattern — it is built as a flat film base for sewing eyes and blush onto, not as a stuffed amigurumi piece. Keep it flat unless you are deliberately adapting it for more dimension.
