What the sample was worked in. Any weight works; the size moves with it.

Each one is typed out whole and gets its own line.

This dragon comes together from three separate pieces: a 15-round head built around a rounded snout, an 11-round tail that shifts from white to sky blue, and five small spikes worked flat and sewn along the back and tail. Bulky chenille yarn in sky blue forms the body, with navy embroidery thread for the face and 18mm safety eyes set before any stuffing goes in. Before the first stitch, have the chenille wound, the hook on hand, stuffing within reach, and pins ready for placing eyes and spikes.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Losing count through plain rounds
Use a stitch marker at the round start on the long straight stretches of the head and tail, since a single missed stitch compounds over several identical rounds before it is noticed.
Overstuffing the tail
Keep stuffing light in the tail so it moves naturally; firm stuffing here fights the piece's intended flexibility.
Sewing spikes before checking placement
Pin all five spikes along the back and tail first and step back to check spacing before sewing any of them down permanently.

Assembly, in order

Step 1Take your time with assembly. This is where your dragon comes to life.
Step 21. Attach snout to head. Pin centered below the eyes. Sew securely using a yarn needle and the long tail.
Step 32. Embroider face. Use navy embroidery thread to create the smile line and small nostrils. The smile shown is a simple curved line. Add small eyebrow lines above each eye for expression.
Step 43. Attach horns. Position on top of the head, angled slightly back and outward. Sew firmly.
Step 54. Attach head to body. Pin the head to the open top of the body. Sew around the entire opening, adding extra stuffing to the neck area if needed.
Step 65. Attach arms. Position on either side of the body, about 2 rounds below where the head meets the body. Sew securely.
Step 76. Attach legs. Position at the front bottom of the body so the dragon sits upright. The legs should angle forward and outward. Take time to ensure he balances well.
Step 87. Attach tail. Sew to the back bottom of the body. The tail should rest along the surface when sitting.
Step 98. Attach spikes. Space the spikes evenly down the center back, starting just below the head and continuing onto the tail. Sew the flattened edge to the body. The photo shows approximately 5 spikes total.

Check these before you start

  • Chenille yarn behaves differently from a smooth-plied yarn, and stitches can look looser than they feel. If stuffing peeks through the fabric, drop to a smaller hook rather than fighting your tension.
  • Stuff the head firmly so it holds its shape against the weight of the horns and snout, but keep the tail lightly stuffed so it can move naturally once attached.

Set-up

  • Wind off enough sky blue chenille from the 200 gram total before starting the head, since it is the largest piece and shares yarn with the spikes.
  • Set a stitch marker at the start of round one and move it every round through all 15 rounds of the head.
  • Read through the tail's color sequence before casting on, since it starts in white and transitions to sky blue partway through its 11 rounds.
  • Check your gauge on a quick swatch with the 5.0mm hook; chenille is forgiving but loose stitches will show stuffing through the fabric.

Finishing

  1. Weave in all tails separately for the head, tail, and each of the five spikes before assembly begins, since loose ends are harder to reach once pieces are sewn together.
  2. Stuff the head firmly and the tail lightly, checking firmness round by round rather than packing it all in at the end.
  3. Flatten the opening on each spike and sew it closed without stuffing, then attach the spikes along the back and tail before final sewing on the head and horns.

Construction

The head's early rounds increase from 6 to 18 stitches in standard amigurumi progression, then level off into straight single crochet rounds, which shapes the rounded muzzle described for the snout.

The spikes are worked flat with a slip stitch join at the end of their final round instead of continuous rounds, which flattens the opening so each spike lies closed and ready to sew on without stuffing.

Time per section

Headabout 90-120 minutes because it runs 15 rounds including the snout shaping and firm stuffing
Tailabout 45-60 minutes because of the white-to-sky-blue color change partway through 11 rounds
Spikes and assemblyabout 60-90 minutes because five spikes are small but working flat and placing them evenly takes care

Common questions

What hook size works best with chenille?
Start with the 5.0mm hook called for in the materials, but go down a size if stuffing shows through your stitches. Chenille's texture can make tension look looser than it actually is, so judge by the fabric, not the hook alone.

These answers came from whoever first published the pattern, kept word for word.
