Common mistakes and their fixes
- Losing the start of the round
- Keep a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round, since the slip-stitch join can be hard to spot once the hat is underway.
- Working both loops in round 14
- Round 14 calls for front loop only; working into both loops there removes the ridge that marks where the brim begins.
- Miscounting increase repeats

Pattern for the Top Part
Starting Loop Start with a slip knot and chain 4 stitches, then slip stitch into the first chain to form a loop.
Round 1
Chain 2, then make 10 double crochets (Dcs) into the loop. Slip stitch into the first Dc to close the round.
Round 2
Chain 2 and crochet 2 Dcs into each stitch. Slip stitch to close. You should now have 20 Dcs.
Round 3
Chain 2 and repeat the pattern of 1 Dc in the next stitch, followed by 2 Dcs in the next. Continue until the end of the round and slip stitch to close. The final count should be 30 Dcs.
Round 4
